Solid wood worktops are perfect for rustic, country spaces, giving any space a cosy and traditional look. Oak, beech, and maple are some of the most traditional wood options, but homeowners looking for something more contemporary or exotic can also opt for bamboo, iroko, or wenge. Many species are quite affordable, but more exotic options may carry a higher price tag.
A solid wood worktop can last for decades - if properly maintained. Wood worktops don’t stand up to scratches, stains, or heat the way stone and artificial worktops do. Wood will scorch when hot pans are placed directly on it, and kitchen utensils are likely to scratch it. The surfaces also need to be oiled biannually to keep stains and damage at bay. If you want the look of stone, wood, quartz, or Dekton worktops without the high price tag, laminate may be the option for you! The worktops are made by affixing a stiff sheet of material onto a particleboard core. They are very cost-effective and come in an endless variety of patterns and colours.
However, keep in mind that with laminate, you get what you pay for. While laminate resists many stains, it scratches easily – and once a laminate surface is scratched, it typically stays scratched. Laminate worktops are also liable to burn or peel. Make sure you do your research on laminate worktops and avoid the cheapest options, as those are liable to give you the most trouble.
